Patrick Wright

Chief Operations & Technology Officer, Barclaycard

What attracted you to Barclaycard?

The people - and the opportunity to help further build a fantastic global brand.

What do you look for in the people you hire?

Bright, fun, action oriented people that challenge the status quo.

In three words, how would you describe your leadership style?

Hands-on, decisive, inclusive.

What was your first job, and what did you learn from it?

My first job was a computer programmer working for my father’s IT company when I was 13 years old. I learned the value of hard work and the challenge of solving complicated problems. Most importantly, I learned that sometimes small mistakes can keep the entire ecosystem from working, so I started to pay great attention to detail.

Tell us something that would surprise people.

I have six children.

What gets you up in the morning?

A challenge - a really, really big challenge. I am energized by what life brings and naturally wake up before dawn.

Previous roles

Chief Operating Officer

Barclaycard US

Founder

Tuyet Consulting

President and Chief Executive Officer

Wincor Nixdorf NA

Head of Retail Operations

JP Morgan Chase

What are your top priorities?

Personally, to see my children through school and set them out in life prepared for its best and most challenging moments. Professionally, to see Barclaycard and its wonderful brand prosper and grow.

What has been the highlight of your career?

The diversity of my career is its highlight. I have had the privilege of doing many different things and through that I have learned different perspectives, how things operate, what people deal with in different parts of the company and what I can do to help them. I hope I am privileged to continue this path for the rest of my career.

If you could change one thing about financial services, what would it be?

Financial Services is an industry undergoing tremendous change, I would like to see us adapt to the change by responding to the needs more broadly of all citizens. We service lots of people, but we also tend to not service many others. I would really like to help make that transition for our industry.

What one attribute would you like to be known for?

I really like to get things done and solve big problems but that will not be my legacy. I hope to be remembered for the impact I have on my family, friends and people close to me.
