What were your most memorable previous jobs?

It was setting up the Financial Crimes Centre of Excellence. I was handed a blank sheet of paper and asked to draw it out, agree it with all the critical parties which included the regulators and build it. It was hugely exciting, and we were able to accomplish a tremendous amount in 12 months. We were able to grow a team from twenty people to two thousand and then reduce the number of locations we were operating in from 22 locations to five. It was really exciting and empowering to be given a blank cheque by the firm and told ‘Go after this.’

What was your first job, what did it teach you?

So, my very first job was actually in a grocery store, bagging groceries. I was in high school and I think they questioned my maths skills which probably wasn’t a bad thing to question at the time! So I bagged groceries for a summer. And what I learned was it’s the basics; if you get the basics right, your halfway there. So I showed up for work on time, my uniform was clean, I worked the hours I was supposed to work, I smiled, I was friendly for customers.  Everything I needed to know to be successful and professional was based on many of these things.

If you weren’t a Chief Operating Officer, what would you be?

I’d be a human rights activist. Particularly focused on women’s rights. It’s something I’m really, really passionate about. So I would absolutely be out there supporting gender equality; whether through leveraging my law degree or just my passion around human rights - that’s what I would do. 

Why did you want to work for Barclaycard?

It’s hugely exciting for me to be involved in a business where innovation is at the heart of what we do every day.

What do you love most about your job?

The people. For me it’s all about the people. I think the management team that I’ve walked into, they are best in class – I should say first class. They are incredibly intelligent, committed, passionate about what they do and really fun to hang out with. The team around me and that includes my extended partners is what I love so much.

What do you do in your spare time?

It’s all about my kids for me. I have 3 children: I have a 19 year old, a 13 year old and an 11 year old and it’s really all about spending time with them and travelling with them, so taking them places, experiencing new parts of the world, sometimes well-travelled places like Disney World, and other times brand new places for them that they’ve never been to

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

I think early on in your career most people tend to look to their manager to solve problems for them. The best advice I got was to solve these problems myself. By collaborating with peers and building relationships I found I could find a solution to most problems. It was a big game changer for me and really helped me develop my career.
